AmeerJamaat-e-Islami Karachi MunemZafar Khan has strongly condemned the recent decisions by the federal government and NEPRA to raise domestic electricity tariffs by 7.12 per unit and impose fixed charges ranging from 200 to 1,000 rupees. He also criticized the Sindh government’s Water Corporation for attempting to increase water taxes by 30 percent instead of the usual 9 percent. He described these actions as adding more burdens to the already struggling public. Khan argued that the increase in electricity tariffs and fixed charges represents yet another anti-people decision by the government.

With severe power shortages, high electricity bills, a harsh slab system, and a tax-laden IMF budget, citizens are already facing significant hardships. He highlighted that while the government had promised 300 units of free electricity, it is now imposing severe inflationary measures without providing any relief to the poor. He noted that Karachi is suffering from an acute electricity and water crisis, with a reign of tanker mafias and a severe water shortage affecting residents.

The Sindh government, the mayor, and the Water Corporation have failed to provide adequate water services, leading to widespread protests. Khan criticized the Water Corporation’s plan to increase water bills by 30%, a significant rise from the usual 9% annual increase. He vowed that Jamaat-e-Islami would raise this issue in the City Council and urged the mayor and the Water Corporation to reconsider this drastic increase in water tariffs.
