ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet has approved a whooping increase of Rs5.72 per unit in Nepra base tariff with effect from July 2024 in line with a condition laid forth by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Reports said the approval was taken from the cabinet members through circulation summary, adding that the decision would be sent to Nepra for uniform tariff.
The federal government will issue a notification to implement it if the increase in base tariff get nod from Nepra.
The government is bound to increase the tariff by July 10 under the conditions set by the global lender for bailout package.
The decision would put an additional burden of Rs600 billion on electricity consumers.
Nepra has approved an increase in the average basic electricity tariff for the financial year 2024-25 from the current Rs29.78 to Rs.35.50 per unit.
Expected Electricity Bill for July 2024
If the Nepra announces new uniform tariff after approving increase in base rate, the electricity bills would be sent to people at the rate of Rs35.50 per unit.
It means people will have to pay additional amount of Rs5.72 per unit on July 2024 bills if the base tariff is increased.
