In a groundbreaking visit to the Fisheries Aquaculture Research Institute in Chilya, Sindh Provincial Advisor for Livestock and Fisheries, Syed NajmiAlam, unveiled a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at revolutionizing the fisheries sector and uplifting local communities.
During his inspection at the Fisheries Training Center, Mr. Alam meticulously reviewed various facilities, including state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced biofloc systems, and cutting-edge breeding units. He received a detailed briefing from Zulfiqar Ali Larik, the Director General of Fisheries, on the diverse fish species and the current landscape of the industry.
A pivotal moment in the visit came with Mr. Alam’s announcement of the government’s steadfast commitment to combatting poverty among fisher families. He disclosed plans under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), where deserving women will be granted a minimum of 50 chickens. This initiative, aimed at alleviating malnutrition by providing eggs for children’s nutrition, promises to significantly enhance local health outcomes.
In a bid to stimulate the growth of fish farming, Mr. Alam revealed bold plans to lease vast swathes of barren land across Sindh to fishers for up to 30 years. “We will provide comprehensive training and technical support to those interested in fish farming, coupled with a substantial 75% subsidy on land leasing costs,” he affirmed.
