Operation against overloading, overcharging launched on highways

Under the directives of Inspector General of National Highway and Motorway Police Salman Chaudhry, Central Region launched a grand operation against overloading and overcharging during Eid holidays.

The Central Region penalized over 4,830 overloaded vehicles. Additional IG Ali Ahmad Sabir Kayani stated that patrolling officers returned more than Rs1.495 million to passengers. The operation was conducted on national highways in the districts of Lahore, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Khanewal, and Nankana Sahib. Additional IG Ali Ahmad Sabir Kayani emphasized that the Motorway Police is providing all possible assistance to road users during their travels. Overloading of vehicles on national highways will not be permitted, and full compliance with traffic laws would be enforced, he added.

As many as 14 transporters were fined for overcharging here Friday. Secretary RTA Sanaullah said about 43 transport vehicles were checked to ensure normal fares were being charged from passengers. He said a total of Rs 42,000 was charged from owners of the vehicles involved in over-charging. A sum of Rs 11,500 was returned back to the passengers as received unfairly to reach their destination. Secretary RTI warned that nobody would be permitted to charge extra money from the commuters. He said action against transporters complicit in overloading and minting extra money from passengers would be continued unabated in the future. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif had directed the relevant authorities to ensure compliance with fixed transport fares in view of the return of passengers at the conclusion of Eid holidays. The Chief Minister had directed a crackdown against those found involved in charging extra fares from passengers in Lahore and other cities of the province.
