ISLAMABAD – Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb unveiled the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24, revealing the performance of the country in the outgoing fiscal year.

Besides providing information about major economic indicators, the document offers insight into the production of milk and meat in Pakistan and its consumption in the fiscal year.

Animal husbandry is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s rural economy, with more than 8 million rural families deeply engaged in livestock production. This sector is a vital lifeline for these families, contributing significantly to their livelihoods by accounting for around 35-40 percent of their total income. In the broader economic landscape, the livestock sector has solidified its position as the primary driver of agricultural growth, comprising approximately 60.84 percent of the agricultural value added and 14.63 percent of the national GDP during FY2024.

Total Milk Production in Fiscal Year 2023-24

Data available in the economic survey showed that Pakistan produced 70,071 tonnes of milk – 26,099 (cow), 41,887 (Buffalo), 47 (sheep), 1,074 (goat) and 956 (camel) – in FY2024.

Total Milk Consumption in Pakistan in FY2024

Pakistan nationals consumed 56,474 tonnes of milk during the year. They drank 20,880 tones of cow milk, 33,509 tonnes of buffalo milk, 42 tones sheep milk, 1,074 goat milk and 968 tonnes camel milk.
