The National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) and Bahria University Karachi jointly hosted an inclusive seminar themed “Awaken New Depths” to celebrate World Oceans Day. The event aimed to highlight the importance of the ocean and promote sustainable interaction with marine ecosystems.

The seminar commenced with a welcome speech by President NIMA, Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed SaeedHI(M). He emphasized the critical role of the sea for Karachi, noting that mere statistics are insufficient to drive change. “We need to mobilize communities and ignite a deeper connection with nature to protect Earth’s vital ecosystems for the benefit of humanity, marine life, and our national economy,” he stated. The event brought together key stakeholders from various maritime sectors, including government officials, the maritime community, academia, industries, and students.

Distinguished experts from the National Institute of Oceanography, United Nations FAO, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Marine Conservation Pakistan, and other organizations addressed the critical challenges and pathways for sustainable marine resource utilization. International expert Dr. Paul Liu, Director from North Carolina State University, USA, provided valuable insights into ocean conservation and the associated challenges and opportunities.

Engaging activities for students were also a highlight of the event. Hundreds of students participated in a “pledge wall” initiative, showcasing their commitment to ocean preservation. Additionally, an online essay competition was held, with prizes distributed by the Guest of Honor, Vice Chancellor of Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS), Professor Dr. Dost Muhammad Baloch. Mayor Karachi, Barrister MurtazaWahabSiddiqui, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

He assured that his department would welcome collaborations aimed at eradicating pollution and conserving ocean resources. The event concluded with the Chief Guest distributing souvenirs to the guest speakers and the Guest of Honor.
