Human rights activist Sarim Burney has been arrested on a human trafficking complaint received from the United States government.
Burney, who won several accolades for his contributions, turned down serious accusations against him and pledged to disclose all relevant information.
In a recently surfaced video clip, he denied allegations and vowed to address them comprehensively upon his return to his homeland.
The man behind non-profitable trust expressed intention to speak out about matters he had previously remained silent on, quoting instances of humiliation he endured. However, Burney did not specify the nature of the allegations. Earlier, Burney was arrested by the Anti-Human Trafficking Police in Karachi.
Sources indicate that he is suspected of involvement in serious crimes, including human trafficking. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had been monitoring Burney’s activities before his arrest.
Burney was apprehended in a joint operation between the Federal Investigation Agency and a US agency immediately after arriving in Karachi from the United States. He is currently in the custody of the FIA’s Anti-Human Trafficking Team, and a legal team has been assembled to meet with him at the FIA office.
