The first Muslim mayor of South Asian descent was unanimously elected to the Brighton and Hove City Council in the United Kingdom earlier this month, reported the BBC.

Mohammed Asaduzzaman enjoyed unanimous support from the councillors after his local election to Brighton & Hove City Council in the Hollingdean and Fiveways ward last May.

“Mr Asaduzzaman was warm, kind, funny, and ambitious for our city and his compassion has already left a mark on the city’s social, cultural, economic, and political landscape. With three decades of residency in Brighton, he has woven himself into the very fabric of the community,” said Council leader Bella Sankey.

She further remarked, “His journey from Bangladesh to Brighton exemplifies a life dedicated to public service and community betterment.” Mr Asaduzzaman, holding a degree in political science, has previously worked with Bangladesh’s state minister for irrigation and water. The mayor has a largely ceremonial role as the first citizen and chairing full council meetings.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he provided 500 free meals and supported vaccination efforts while aiding individuals with legal needs.

The mayor traditionally supports local charities each year. Asaduzzaman has chosen BHT Sussex, the Sussex Cricket Foundation, Chomp Brighton, My University Hospitals Sussex, Brighton Students’ Union, and the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust.—Agencies
