ISLAMABAD – The ongoing protests in Muzaffarabad, and parts of Azad Kashmir turned fatal as agitators clashed with paramilitary troops despite subsidies announcement.

It was reported that two men lost their lives in clashes with Rangers on Monday, bringing the death toll from the five-day protests to 3. AJK residents have been protesting for last five days following a call from the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) for cut in power tariffs, flour prices, and the removal of elite privileges.

The recent fatalities occurred in Barakot, where angry protesters set a vehicle on fire. Law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the protests, with reports of four people injured by aerial firing.

In Shoran, protesters set fire to three Rangers’ vehicles, leading to more clashes with law enforcement, resulting in three protesters being injured, one critically.  The situation in the area is reported to be tense, with ongoing violent clashes.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered immediate release of Rs23 billion to address the ongoing issue.

Despite the government’s attempt to diffuse tension, protests continue in valley on Monday.
