ISLAMABAD – Three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to take the reins of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz as his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, the sitting PM, stepped down from party President post.
Shehbaz Sharif tendered resignation as party chief after calls called on Nawaz Sharif to resume leadership. The party will elect a new president on May 28, with Shehbaz having been elected unopposed in 2018.
Earlier, Shehbaz succeeded his elder brother, who was initially removed as president by the Supreme Court but later designated as the party’s lifelong leader.
Shehbaz praised Nawaz as Pakistan’s only political heir to Jinnah and thanked other leaders for their roles. Rana Sanaullah, PM’s adviser, said senior leaders urged Nawaz to assume the presidency, believing his leadership will resonate with Pakistanis.
Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan, but he failed to take majority in 2024 election. PML-N, once favored to win, was forced to form coalition government. PTI alleges election manipulation but has emerged with a stronger position.
