PAKISTANI universities, much like their similar institutions in other countries, play a major role in shaping the nation’s future. Their responsibilities extend beyond imparting quality education, research, community service, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. There are five key functions of the universities described by the higher education experts and these are important for the development of a knowledge-based economy.
First main function is providing quality education to the students. At the core as university’s existence lies in its educational mandate. Pakistani universities strive to provide quality education to students across various disciplines and are equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities to excel in their domain. It is all carried out through well-designed curricula, experienced faculty, and modern teaching methodologies. This helps them to produce highly skilled and competent graduates who can contribute to the economic growth. To carry out all, the Universities need to have necessary infrastructure i.e. Laboratories, Library, Trained Laboratory Staff, and well qualified teachers. Most of the Universities follow standard practices of cabinet criteria circulated through HEC wherein minimum standards for establishment of the University and Department are mentioned.
The second main function of the Universities is to carry out relevant research. It is a fundamental role of the universities, as it helps to innovate, generate a new knowledge, and addresses societal challenges. The Universities are required promote and support research activities in the relevant areas i.e. Sciences, Technology, Humanities and Social sciences. This will bring breakthroughs in the technology and will help to provide innovative solutions to the problems being faced by the Businesses, Industry, and the Society.
Third main function is provision of the Social Services. It is expected Universities that through provision of knowledge and training Universities will play a role of catalyst or bringing positive change in the society. For this, it must engage community and show case its potential in terms of graduates, events, and activities. It may include Scientific, Awareness events, Book Exhibitions, Discussion and Debates on social issues. The regularity of such events will create a bonded relationship between the society and the University. Such events will help students to learn how to interact and communicate with various stakeholders and it will be helpful for them when they will acquire a job or setup a business after graduation. The intellectual knowledge of faculty members and experience will also help the society and the country for sustainable development.
Fourth main function is Cultural Transmission t. Our region and country are rich in culture and heritage. There is a need to transfer those cultural values to our youth. Our cultural diversity should be promoted as our strength. Nowadays, Pakistani youth is indirectly following different western values promoted through electronic and social media these may be countered by regular cultural events. There is a need to arrange the same on regular basis in each province and national level. It will educate our youth about our traditional values in which respectful & responsible behaviour is the main principle. Through these events our faculty members and guest speakers will educate them to help the poor & under privilege people. The Universities may also offer formal diploma or certificate programs through online mode or traditional mode. Events related to historical milestone of country’s establishment may also be made a regular feature. The objective is to connect our youth with our regional and cultural values.
The fifth main function of the Universities is to promote International Exchange and Cooperation. Globalization has many benefits like it helps to learn from other institutions and individuals on emerging issues and helps gauge our practices in academic, research and other areas. In order to remain visible at the international level, the Universities are required to establish an exchange and collaborative programs with reputed foreign institutions. The faculty, students and staff may be engaged in various events and formal programs which may be academic, research related formal programs, or capacity building and showcasing activities. Such exchanges will help them to gain and retain latest knowledge in their domain.
These five functions of the universities are interconnected and collectively contribute to the nation’s progress and development. The Universities, by providing quality education, advancing research, serving local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering international collaboration, these institutions can play a crucial role in shaping the future of Pakistan. It is the main responsibility of the University to nurture the nation’s intellectual capital, introduce innovation, and contribute to the overall well-being of society, making them invaluable assets in the pursuit of a prosperous and sustainable future for the country.
