K-Electric, the primary power provider in Karachi, has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a substantial increase in the power tariff. Here are the key points regarding this development. K-Electric has proposed a staggering increase of Rs18.86 per unit in the power tariff to cover monthly Fuel Charges Adjustments (FCA) for seven months.
These adjustments would apply from July 2023 to March 2024. Additionally, the power utility has also requested a reduction in the power tariff for two months, amounting to Rs0.29 per unit. NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on K-Electric’s application on May 9, where the proposed tariff adjustments will be reviewed and deliberated upon.
In a separate development, it has been revealed that the federal government has finalized a plan to privatize profitable power distribution companies (Discos). Here are the key highlights of this plan. The decision to privatize profit-making Discos reflects the government’s strategy to reform the power sector and enhance efficiency in electricity distribution. Privatization aims to bring in private investment and expertise to improve the operational efficiency and financial sustainability of the power distribution companies. This move is part of broader efforts by the government to address issues related to the power sector and ensure a reliable and affordable supply of electricity across the country.
