ISLAMABAD – Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan.
“The Prime Minister has been pleased to designate Mr Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, as Deputy Prime Minister with immediate effect and until further orders,” reads the notification issued by Cabinet Division on Sunday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also made this announcement in a post shared on micro-blogging platform X (former Twitter).
A key member of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) has previously served as Federal Finance Minister. He is also the leader of the Upper House (Senate).

Ishaq Dar
Ishaq Dar, a close ally of Mian Nawaz Sharif, held top positions in several governments. Dar holds background in commerce and accounting, with degrees from institutions in Pakistan and Britain.
He started his career in 80s, joining PML-N and later serving in various ministerial roles. He faced a period of exile and legal challenges. Despite woes, the seasoned politician continued to be involved in politics and returned to Pakistan in 2003, serving in the Senate and holding key positions in PMLN.
His tenure as country’s Finance Minister was marked by efforts to stabilize the economy and negotiate with international lenders like IMF. His appointment as Deputy Prime Minister highlights his continued influence in Pakistan’s government.
