Long Eid-ul Adha Holidays expected: People likely to enjoy 5-day break this year

ABU DHABI – People in Pakistan, UAE and other parts of world enjoyed long holidays on Eid ul Fitr, and now astronomers shared update for the expected Eid ul Adha break.

In United Arab Emirates, people returned to regular routine after prolonged holidays. After the recent festivity break, another significant holidays are just months away, as Eid ul Adha, the second major Islamic festival, will likely to be a five-day weekend in the second week of June 2024.

Eid ul Adha comes around two months and a few days after Eid ul Fitr, following the lunar-based Islamic calendar. The exact dates will be confirmed closer to the time.

The Islamic calendar’s months last either 29 or 30 days, depending on sighting of crescent Moon. Arafah Day usually held on Dhul Hijjah 9, and Eid ul Adha is celebrated over three days afterwards.

Eid ul Adha Dates 2024

As per Hijri calendar shared by Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), Dhul Hijjah 1 is likely to be on Saturday, June 8. Based on this, Arafah Day would be on Sunday, June 16, and Eid Al Adha on Monday, June 17 (Dhul Hijjah 10).

The expected break would be from Sunday, June 16, to Wednesday, June 19, including weekend (Saturday, June 15). These dates are not final and subject to change based on Moon sightings.

What is Eid ul Adha?

Eid ul-Adha, also known as Bakra Eid or Qurabani Eid, holds key significance in Islam, as it commermorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) unwavering obedience to Allah SWT.

The event underscores the core values of faith, sacrifice, and compassion deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. Eid Day started with congregational prayers at mosques, where faithful gather seeking blessings and divine guidance.

After the prayers, Muslims performs Qurbani, or the sacrificial offering, which mirrors Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion. The meat is divided in family members, friends, and for less fortunate.
