Interference by executive in judicial matters won’t be tolerated: CJP

ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa reiterated a strong stance against interference in judicial proceedings, stressing the judiciary’s integrity is of paramount importance.

A statement issued by the top court quoting CJP Isa said any interference with judicial matters will not be tolerated. The apex court judge held a meeting with the Prime Minister as top officials discussed the Islamabad High Court judge’s concerns about intimidation and interference from spy agencies.

The meeting between Chief Justice and Prime Minister was said to be extraordinary, as the two sides reportedly discussed previous incidents.

“Considering the gravity of the allegations leveled in the said letter, the CJP called a meeting on the same day with the Chief Justice and all the Judges of the Islamabad High Court after Iftar at 8 pm at the Chief Justice’s residence. The concerns of all the Judges were heard individually in a meeting that lasted for over 2 and a half hours,” the official statement said.

It said the Full Court deliberated over the issues raised in the letter sent by the six Judges of the Islamabad High Court. Officials developed a consensus amongst the majority of the members of the Full Court that in view of current situation. CJP then claified that interference by Executive in the affairs and judicial workings of Judges will not be tolerated and under no circumstances can independence of the judiciary be allowed to be compromised.

CJP and other Supreme Court judges agreed that the independence of the judiciary is a foundational pillar that upholds the rule of law and a strong democracy.
