As the holy month of Ramazan begins, people are bracing themselves for customary extra hike in food prices — over and above the two-digit inflationary spiral that the country has been facing for almost four years. It is disheartening to witness how essential kitchen items such as vegetables, fruits, sugar, edible oil, ghee, meat, eggs and pulses are subjected to substantial price hikes by unscrupulous traders, further exacerbating the economic hardships faced by many. Also unbridled export of meat and vegetables has further strained domestic prices.
The recent surge in prices, averaging at 31.5%, with some items witnessing up to a staggering 60% increase, is not justifiable, especially during a month that emphasizes compassion and communal care. In many countries, including several European nations, efforts are made to reduce the prices of essential items during Ramazan, recognising the significance of this month to Muslim communities. However, in our country, instead of easing burden on consumers, traders and retailers exploit this period to maximise their profits, disregarding the principles of fairness and empathy. It is important for both federal and provincial governments to take proactive measures to ensure stable prices during Ramazan. Price control committees must be fully activated and empowered to crack down on profiteers who seek to exploit this month for personal gain. Strict enforcement of regulations and penalties for price manipulation are essential to deter such unethical practices. Additionally, provincial governments should ensure sale of quality items at special Ramazan bazaars. Ramazan is a month of God’s blessings, where spirit of charity and compassion should prevail. Traders and retailers must recognise the sanctity of this time and exercise caution in their business practices. Instead of exploiting the heightened demand for essential items, they should embrace the principles of empathy and fairness, ensuring that consumers are not burdened unjustly.
