ISLAMABAD – Top political parties reached a formal agreement to form new government after 2024 general elections as PML-N and PPP bagged fewer seats than independent candidates.
After at least six rounds of talks, both sides reached a consensus and now party stalwarts are being considered for key roles.
Under the new understanding, PPP is getting Senate chairman’s slot and Yousaf Raza Gillani is favourite for the role. The former premier is already part of the upper house and his tenure will last another three years.
After taking the coveted slot, Yousaf Gillani will vacate his NA-148 seat that he clinched in the February 8 polls.
In recently held polls, Gillani bagged 67,326 votes to beat PTI-backed Taimur Malik, who received 67,033 votes.
It was reported that Gillani’s son will run for election on his vacated seat. His other children Ali Musa and Abdul Qadir have already bagged from NA-151 and 152.
Gillani, 71, served as 16th PM from 2008 to 2012. In the year 2021, the senior politician was elected as Senator. He joined Pakistan Muslim League in 1978, and was part of Zia-ul-Haq’s setup. He stepped down from Muslim League in 1986 and joined PPP in 1988.
He was imprisoned for 6 years at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi during Musharraf’s regime. Following the 2008 polls, PPP stalwart was elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan.
