A dire shortage of insulin vaccines has hit the District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ) in Wana, along with several Basic Health Units (BHUs) in the Lower South Waziristan region, leaving diabetic patients in a life-threatening situation. The scarcity of essential medicines, including insulin injections, has persisted despite the approval of grants by the provincial caretaker government for major hospitals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Gul Nawaz Wazir, a distressed father, shared his ordeal with the media, revealing that his five-year-old daughter has been battling diabetes since childhood. Doctors have prescribed insulin injections as a crucial part of her treatment. However, the unavailability of insulin in government hospitals has left him helpless, as the cost of obtaining the medication from private facilities is beyond his financial means.
Gul Nawaz expressed the agonizing reality that his daughter’s struggle for survival has intensified, emphasizing the urgency of securing insulin injections to avert a potential tragedy. He lamented that despite weeks of searching, no government hospital in the region had the crucial medication in stock.
Responding to the crisis, DMS Dr. Zain Ullah Wazir assured the public that a formal request has been made to the provincial government for the immediate supply of insulin injections.
He pledged that once the supplies are received, diabetic patients in the region would be promptly provided with the life-saving medication.
The gravity of the situation extends beyond Wana, as all government BHUs and dispensaries in the outskirts of Lower South Waziristan have become non-functional due to the prolonged absence of essential medicines. Residents in remote hilly areas, particularly in Tehsil Birmal, Tehsil Toi Khullah, and Shakai, are grappling with severe difficulties, affecting children, girls, women, and the elderly.
