THE heinous attack on a polio programme official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of life and injuries to a police officer, underscores a disturbing and consistent pattern of violence against those working tirelessly to eradicate polio from Pakistan. The start of January witnessed another devastating incident in Mamond tehsil, where seven policemen lost their lives and over 20 sustained injuries in a bomb attack on a police vehicle. According to a report, since 2012, a total of 109 people have been killed in polio-related incidents, with 162 individuals, including policemen, health workers and civilians, suffering injuries during this period.

These attacks not only inflict harm on those directly involved in the polio eradication efforts but also hinder the progress made in eliminating this debilitating disease. Those responsible for such acts are our enemies. These terrorists aim to undermine the nation’s progress, tarnishing the reputation of the country on the global stage. There is an urgent need for enhanced security measures, particularly in sensitive areas such as merged districts. The government must prioritize the safety of polio workers, providing them with the necessary resources and protection to carry out their duties without fear for their lives. The services and sacrifices of polio workers in the line of duty deserve the highest recognition. It is imperative to institute a comprehensive martyrs package for those who lose their lives in the pursuit of a polio-free Pakistan. This gesture not only honours their commitment but also provides support to their families in the aftermath of these tragic incidents. Furthermore, a collective effort is required to raise awareness about the crippling disease and encourage vaccination. Public education campaigns must be intensified to dispel myths surrounding polio vaccination and emphasize the importance of immunization in safeguarding the health of our children. As a nation, we must unite against the forces that seek to impede our progress. The fight against polio is not just a health initiative; it is a testament to our resilience and determination to overcome challenges. Together, we can rid Pakistan of this virus and eliminate the stigma that has persisted for years. Let us stand in solidarity with our polio workers, honour their sacrifices and work towards a healthier and brighter future.
