ISLAMABAD – The federal government is preparing to impose another electricity bomb on the public, potentially raising the cost of electricity by Rs.5.62 per unit.
The sources privy to the development said that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve an increase of Rs.5.62 per unit in electricity prices.
This request by CPPA to NEPRA, made in December, is in connection with the fuel price adjustment.
NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on the CPPA’s request on January 31, and if the request is approved, the consumers may bear a burden of over Rs.49 billion.
It is worth noting that electricity consumers are already facing difficulties due to a surge in fuel price adjustments, reaching up to Rs.8.56 per unit. This has further exacerbated the impact of rising prices on consumers.
It was revealed that in the electricity bills for January, an additional burden of Rs.4.13 per unit was imposed as part of the monthly fuel adjustment for November 2023. While consumers are already grappling with a basic tariff exceeding Rs50 per unit, additional burdens for separate monthly and quarterly adjustments were introduced this month.
The recovery for this three-month adjustment is expected to take place from consumers until March 2024. In the adjustment for January to March 2024, an additional charge of Rs.1.15 per unit is levied.
