IN a commendable move to boost connectivity and propel Pakistan into the digital age, Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Umar Saif, has announced an ambitious project to lay 200,000 kilometres of optical fibre cable. This initiative holds immense significance, promising to revolutionise the country’s communication infrastructure and foster economic growth.

Fibre optic technology is renowned for its high-speed data transmission capabilities, low latency and reliability. Investing in such a vast network will enable us to bridge the digital divide, connect remote areas, and provide seamless Internet access to people across the country.

The enhanced connectivity brought about by optical fibre project is poised to have far-reaching economic impacts. A well-developed communication infrastructure is vital for attracting foreign investment, fostering innovation and promoting entrepreneurship. Businesses, both large and small, stand to benefit from faster and more reliable Internet connections, enabling them to expand their operations, engage in e-commerce and participate more effectively in the global digital economy. Moreover, the initiative aligns with government’s focus on digitalisation of services. From e-governance to online education and healthcare, a robust fibre optic network will facilitate the efficient delivery of digital services, ultimately streamlining administrative processes and improving public service accessibility.

Umar Saif’s tenure as Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication has been marked by a series of strategic initiatives aimed at empowering youth through IT. Recognising the pivotal role that technology plays in modern world, Saif has championed programmes that equip young Pakistanis with skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in digital era. By creating platforms for young tech enthusiasts to showcase their ideas and providing support for start-up ecosystems, Saif has fostered a culture of innovation that is essential for economic growth and competitiveness.

We hope that initiatives taken by him will be taken forward by next government that will go a long way to position Pakistan as a dynamic player in global digital landscape.
