ISLAMABAD – In the latest developments at the Supreme Court, the hearing of the PTI symbol case continued with Barrister Ali Zafar, the lead counsel for the party, arguing that neither the Constitution nor the Election Act grants the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) the authority to evaluate intraparty polls.
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar posed two crucial questions: the court’s jurisdiction to overturn the ECP decision and the ECP’s competence to scrutinize intraparty elections.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, on Friday, sternly warned of potential repercussions for PTI if discrepancies were detected in its intraparty polls. He emphasized the constitutional status of the ECP, urging the court not to intervene in its matters.
On the following day, Chief Justice Isa underscored that the central issue at hand is democracy within political parties, asserting that it should be upheld not only at the national level but also within party structures.
The court proceedings shed light on the intricate intersection of legal and democratic considerations in the ongoing case.
