LAHORE – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has drawn a lot of ire by naming former national skipper Salman Butt as a consultant to chief selector Wahab Riaz as Mr Butt remained a tainted past with spot-fixing scandal.

Butt’s appointment sparked debate across social media platforms, with Pakistanis expressing strong opposition to his involvement in such a role.

Amid the backlash, Chief Selector Wahab Riaz holds a press conference in which he confirmed Butt’s removal from the coveted role. Justifying his move, Wahab said Salman Butt was appointed for the role to share his opinion, however, he lamented backlash from media and people who according to him created a mess.

Wahab said he reverted his decision and Butt cannot remain part of PCB in light of the sentiments of people.

He however opined that such things should be left behind as Salman Butt completed his punishment.

For the unversed, ex-skipper Salman Butt was banned from cricket for 10 years in a spot-fixing case surfaced during national team’s tour of England in 2010.

He remained part of Pakistan national team from 2003 to 2010, and led team along with Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif when he was accused of carried out specific on-field actions. Later, British court imposed a five-year ban on them.
