NEW YORK – Henry Kissinger, one of the most controversial US diplomats and former secretary for state to ex-president Richard Nixod died at the age of 100.

“Dr. Henry Kissinger, a respected American scholar and statesman, died today at his home in Connecticut,” his consulting firm Kissinger Associates announced in a statement issued late Wednesday.

Kissinger’s family will hold a private funeral, it said, adding that a memorial service will be organized in New York, where Kissinger grew up after his Jewish family escaped from Nazi Germany.

The consultation firm did not provide a cause of death. Despite being a centenarian, Kissinger was an active person as in July this year he travelled to China in July to meet President Xi Jinping.

Afer Nixon was ousted over Watergate scandal, Kissinger later served under his successor, Gerald Ford.

He was conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiations to end the Vietnam War, even though the conflict did not immediately end.

While Kissinger’s intellectual level is appreciated even by his critics, he was also known for his ruthless philosophy of realpolitik.
