Environment Protection Department, Government of Punjab has officially launched a comprehensive awareness campaign under the Punjab Green Development Program supported by the World Bank.
The awareness campaign aims to create awareness about the “adverse effects of single-use plastics on the environment and health”. Single-use plastics are less useful and more harmful, taking hundreds of years to decompose. Single-use plastics are not only harmful to human health but also to aquatic life. The campaign was inaugurated with a seminar held in Lahore, which was attended by a large number of people from various sectors including retailers, plastic producers, media representatives, civil society organizations and chambers of commerce.
On this occasion, Samia Saleem (Project Director Punjab Green Development Program) informed about the recently approved plastic management strategy while discussing the steps taken by the Punjab government to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
The event served as an important platform to highlight the government’s commitment to reducing the negative impact of single-use plastics. Participants expressed interest in insightful discussions on sustainable practices, environmental responsibility, and the role of the sector in promoting a plastic-free future. Speakers from LUMS, Punjab University and Government College University informed the stakeholders and the public about the environmental and health hazards of single-use plastics.
The awareness campaign will be extended from Lahore to other major cities of Punjab while the awareness activities will include a series of seminars and awareness sessions in various schools in which the audience will be informed about the environmental and health hazards of single-use plastics and their impact will be widely known.
