LAHORE – The caretaker Punjab government on Tuesday confirmed that it had suspended the sentence awarded to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif by an accountability court in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.

Caretaker information minister Amir Mir confirmed the development, saying the petition in this regard had been filed by the former prime minister.

He said the seven-year sentence was suspended under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedural Code as the government is authorised under this law. He said the final decision will be taken by court.

He recalled that Nawaz Sharif’s sentence had also been suspended under the same section in 2019 before his departure to London.

In December 2018, an accountability court sentenced the former PM to jail for seven years and imposed a fine in the Al-Azizia case. Following the decision, authorities had arrested him and put him behind the bars in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.
