The United Nations said that the recent earthquakes have affected more than 43 thousand people in the eastern Herat province.

Speaking at a news conference, the UN Deputy Special Representative, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan said they will need over $93 million in the upcoming six months for the betterment of lives of the earthquake’s victims.

“From our initial assessment, we registered some 1,500 deaths and about 2,000 injuries.

And in addition, we also realized that 43,000 people have been directly impacted and affected by these earthquakes,” said Daniel Peter Endres, the Deputy Special Representative, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan.

In the meantime, the earthquake-affected people in Herat province ask for urgent assistance saying that they are living in the worst situation.

“Most of the people are concerned about the lack of water, we ask for the water tankers to come closer to populated areas so that people can access them,” said Abdul Karim, a Herat resident.

“It has been a long time since we are out of our houses, we are 12 to 13 people in our family that includes children and the elderly. Children are crying all the time,” said Abdul Haq, another needy person.

It comes as the recent earthquake has killed over 2,500 people and destroyed many villages in different districts of Herat province.
