The caretaker Chief Ministers of Sindh and Punjab, Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar and Mohsin Naqvi, have come together to address a long-standing threat to law and order in their respective provinces. Their decision to launch a joint operation against dacoits in the katcha areas is a step in the right direction and highlights the importance of cooperation and unity in the face of persistent challenges.

For years, the katcha areas along the Indus River have been plagued by the activities of dacoit groups. These criminals, armed with sophisticated weaponry, have managed to evade capture time and again, posing a grave threat to the safety and security of the local population. It is also evident that such dacoits cannot operate with complete impunity without the support of some influential political figures. The decision by the Sindh and Punjab caretaker Chief Ministers to launch a joint operation signifies a commitment to putting an end to this menace. Their understanding to simultaneously block exit points leading to both provinces is a strategic move that aims to leave no room for these criminals to escape justice. Sharing intelligence and organizing joint meetings of the Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) of both provinces will enhance coordination and the effectiveness of the operation. The challenges in these regions are not to be underestimated. Dacoits have established hideouts on islands in the Indus, equipped with advanced weaponry, including rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns. Previous law enforcement efforts have proven insufficient, often necessitating military intervention. However, the long-term solution lies in sustained, coordinated operations that prioritize the rule of law over political expediency. Engaging with the local communities and tribal leaders will also be pivotal for the success of this operation. By working together, these provinces can pave the way for a more secure future for the local population, free from the menace of dacoits that has persisted for far too long.
