Egypt strongly condemned on Monday the incursion into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by “extremists” under the protection of Israeli police.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called on Israeli authorities to immediately stop actions that provoke millions of Muslims across the world and ignite violence in the “occupied Palestinian territories.”
The statement said that recurrent assaults on the Al-Aqsa Mosque violate international laws and undermine efforts to revive the peace process based on a two-state solution.
Egypt also renewed calls for influential international parties and the United Nations to adhere to their responsibilities to protect the Palestinian people’s rights.
“Egypt is fully committed to supporting the Palestinians’ rights and backing all attempts to reach a fair comprehensive solution for the Palestinian cause,” the statement added.
The Israeli forces attacked Muslim worshippers on Sunday morning at Bab al-Silsila, also known as the Chain Gate, one of the main entrances to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the official Palestinian News Agency reported.
Israeli media said there were no serious disturbances at the site, and only minor scuffles were reported between the police and Palestinians as Jewish visitors toured the site.—Xinhua
