IN a landmark development, Pakistan Army has publicly declared its full support for policies and measures aimed at economic revival of the country. The institution reiterated its resolve to assist the government in curbing activities hampering economic stability and investors’ confidence, under Special Investment Facilitation Council. The statement came during the 259th Corps Commanders’ Conference (CCC) presided by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir at the General Headquarters, Rawalpindi.

The statement assumes greater significance in the backdrop of attempts being made by some external and internal forces to undermine moves towards much-needed economic stability as part of their own nefarious agenda. Conspiracies of the external enemies are understandable as they try to seize every opportunity to harm Pakistan but unfortunately some internal forces are also engaged in intensive campaigns to malign and discredit the country through different tactics including the spread of fake news on an almost daily basis. Therefore, the announcement of the Pakistan Army is reassuring and it might boost the confidence of the nation which is struggling to overcome its economic and financial challenges. In fact, the country has already achieved demonstrable progress in its fight against illegal activities – thanks to the wholehearted cooperation of the Army. The initiation of action against smuggling of goods and dollars has raised the ray of hope for a visible improvement in the situation in the near future. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Army Chief General Asim Munir had a comprehensive interaction with members of the business community as part of his efforts to assuage their fears and apprehensions. He also expressed his firm determination to go after smugglers and hoarders in a big way and his statements and the support of his institution made a difference within days as rupee has strengthened and a downward trend in prices of essential commodities is being witnessed. However, the magnitude of the problems facing Pakistan demands that the campaign against smugglers, speculators and hoarders would not be a symbolic exercise and must continue with added enthusiasm to produce the desired results. There is no reason the campaign should not succeed as it has the backing of the entire nation and the institutions carrying out operations have the potential to deliver.
