Sindh introduces new physical education curriculum

Staff Reporter Secretary School Education and Literacy Dept Khalid Hyder presided over a ceremony at a local hotel to mark the launch of a new Physical Education Curriculum for Sindh. The curriculum is designed with joint efforts of School Education and Literacy Dept (SELD), Directorate of Curriculum, Assessment and Research (DCAR) and technical support from Right to Play International. Physical Education has long been a neglected subject in the country and Physical Education teachers working in Government schools lacked the basic tools with which to integrate important and essential life skills through play. Play based learning is an essential tool of modern learning and it is widely acknowledged that a holistic development of children in schools. With the development of this new curriculum, Government school teachers in Sindh will be able to have a clear instruction and will have an improved capacity of engaging children through sports and play. The curriculum has been notified by the School Education and Literacy Department and will be available for teachers to use all over Sindh. The curriculum is developed on the basis of modern research and new learning standards. This curriculum will benefit over 5 million children enrolled in Government schools. The event was also attended by Country Director of Right to Play International, Pakistan Iqbal Ali Jatoi, Dr Fouzia Khan, Chief of Curriculum Wing, Ghulam Asghar Memon, Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Research (DCAR) and the Chief Planning Officer of Reform Support Unit. Jatoi shared that this PE curriculum is a great gift from Sindh Government for the children of Sindh. He also stressed the need for training of all Physical Education Teachers in Sindh on the new methodology. The Secretary Education stressed that the new PE curriculum will help to retain children in schools and also help to address the crisis of out of school children in Sindh. It is to note that Sindh has the second highest number of out of school children in the country.
