IN recent months, there has been an uptick in terrorist acts, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. The devastating suicide blast at a JamiatUlema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) workers’ convention in Bajaur district on Sunday, resulting in the loss of 44 innocent lives and leaving over 100 wounded, is a grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorism.
The latest terror act underscores the brutal tactics employed by extremist groups to intimidate and destabilize communities. Such attacks not only take a toll on human lives but also cast a shadow of fear over citizens, leading to a chilling effect on their democratic rights and engagement. This is an election year in our country but if this atmosphere of fear and insecurity persists, there is a genuine risk that people may be discouraged from participating in the electoral process. Also at a time when the focus is on attracting investment from other countries, such terror acts will send a negative message abroad. Whilst recognizing the sacrifices of our security personnel in the war on terrorism, it is important to further intensify the operation against terrorists. Proactive intelligence gathering, swift response to threats and dismantling terrorist networks are essential steps to ensure a safe and conducive environment for political activities. Additionally, authorities must address any lapses in security arrangements during political gatherings and events. Political parties and leaders must also play a vital role in promoting a peaceful electoral environment. They should engage in constructive dialogue, refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and foster an atmosphere of tolerance and inclusivity. Parties must prioritize the safety of their members and supporters, taking necessary precautions during gatherings and events to prevent further tragedies. Initiatives focusing on education, economic opportunities and social cohesion can help address the underlying grievances that terrorists exploit. We should also strongly raise the matter of cross-border terrorism with the Afghan authorities which have a responsibility to ensure that their soil is not used by the TTP or other terror outfits against Pakistan. Militancy and terrorism is not confined by borders. Responsibility rests with the international community to help Pakistan fight this scourge.
