IN a commendable move, the government has introduced a groundbreaking subsidy program, amounting to a substantial amount of 151 billion rupees, aimed at safeguarding power consumers from line losses. Addressing a news conference in Karachi, Minister for Power Khurram Dastagir said power based companies based in Lahore, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan Sukkur, Hyderabad, Quetta and Peshawar will cumulatively get this amount in subsidy to overcome their line losses and other issues.
One of the significant issues hampering the power sector in Pakistan has been the persistent problem of line losses. These losses, occurring during the transmission and distribution of electricity, not only burden the consumers but also strain the national power grid. The government’s subsidy program is a strategic step in addressing this challenge. By allocating substantial funds towards this end, the government has demonstrated its commitment to efficiency and accountability within the power sector. We believe that the funds allocated towards this purpose will facilitate the improvement and modernization of power infrastructure, reducing wastage and inefficiencies. The implementation of smart grid technologies, such as advanced metering infrastructure and distribution automation, can significantly enhance monitoring and control, enabling prompt identification and rectification of faults that lead to line losses. The government must now also give clear timelines to the DISCOs to reduce their line losses. There should also be zero tolerance for power theft. Whilst the black sheep in DISCOs be identified and given punishment according to the law, those indulged in the power pilferage also need to be taken to task. Raising public awareness about the importance of energy conservation and responsible electricity usage is also crucial. The government should launch public awareness campaigns highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of minimizing wastage and encouraging energy efficient practices. Educating consumers on how to detect and report electricity theft or tampering will also play a significant role in reducing losses caused by illegal connections. Doing so will also contribute in bringing down the volume of circular debt. Reforms in the power sector have become imperative to ensure its sustainability and affordability.
