A petition seeking simultaneous elections across the country was filed on Thursday in the Supreme Court. Malik Faisal Mehmood, a citizen of Talagang, requested to postpone the provincial elections till the general elections. “According to the Constitution, the people can choose their true representatives only through simultaneous elections across the country,” the petition stated. “There will be more expenses if election to the two provincial assemblies [Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa] and the National Assembly are held separately,” it added. “The caretaker governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should be extended till the general elections,” it demanded. “By holding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa first, the system of caretaker governments in general elections across the country will also be affected,” it pointed out. The president, federal government, election commission and both the provincial governments had been made parties in the petition.
