ISLAMABAD – Shaukat Tarin, the leader of the former ruling Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf and ex-finance chief, has been booked by Federal Investigation Agency in a sedition case pertaining to his audio leaks about the IMF deal.

The Cyber Crime Wing of the apex investigation agency lodged the case under the PECA act, and sections related to sedition statements conducing to public mischief, a day after Interior Minister confirmed the development about his arrest for sabotaging the deal.

Rana Sanaullah, in a recent press conference, said FIA was allowed to detain the noted economist as it sought permission.

In August 2022, a purported audio call of a defiant politician surfaced in which a voice believed to be that of Imran Khan’s former aide can be heard advising the finance ministers of Punjab and KP to spoil the much-needed deal with IMF by refusing to generate extra funds in the guise of massive floods.

FIA officials told the media that the PTI leader failed to respond in an appropriate manner during interrogation for the leaked audio tape.

In the complaint, it was stated that Tarin affected the then-ongoing deals, and such mischievous acts may disrupt public tranquillity and create an ill will among pillars of the state.
