FIFA the governing body of World Football has decided to issue match bans to 4 Uruguay players following an inquiry into their actions at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and defender Jose Maria Gimenez have been handed four-match bans while experienced campaigners Diego Godin and Edinson Cavani have been banned for a single match for their part in confronting the referee following their World Cup match against Ghana.

The players will also have to carry out football-related community service and will have to pay fines of up to 20,000 Swiss francs ($21,701). The Country’s federation has also been fined 50,000 Swiss francs for the behaviour of its supporters and team members, FIFA said.

The governing body of football announced the complete details of their decision on their website.

Uruguay players had been under investigation by FIFA after being eliminated from the World Cup and angrily confronting the German referee Daniel Siebert after the final whistle. The players took exception to his officiating after he denied their penalty claims during the match against Ghana for fouls on Darwin Nunez and Edison Cavani.

Their 2-0 win in the game was not enough to surpass South Korea who got the better of Portugal in their game to advance to the knockout stages at the South Americans’ expense.

Uruguay is scheduled to play an international friendly in late March but has not announced their opponents yet.
