Legislators in the Upper House of Parliament on Friday passed a resolution condemning incident of burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden and the Netherlands.

The senators called the government for lodging strong protest with the envoys of Sweden and the Netherlands to convey the sentiments of the Muslims on the shameful acts.

The legislators strongly protested the governments of Sweden and the Netherlands for allowing the extremist elements for this heinous crime in the garb of freedom of expression.

Taking part in the discussion, Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar strongly condemned the desecration of Holy Quran in the two European countries. He said: “Islam preaches the message of peace, tolerance and brotherhood and the Holy Quran is a complete code of life”. The Minister stated that Islamophobic incidents in European countries were a matter of great concern.

Azam Nazeer Tarar added, “The government will take up the matter seriously at appropriate forums including the United Nations, OIC and the European Union and we will register our protest in a responsible manner”.

Former PM and PPP leader Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said protests were taking place in different parts of the world over the heinous crime committed in the two European countries. He said the acts in European countries have hurt the sentiments of Muslim Ummah.

Taking the floor, Mushtaq Ahmad stated, “The desecration of Holy Quran is an immoral, provocative and terrorist attack against Muslims,” and called for lodging strong protest with the envoys of Sweden and the Netherlands to convey the sentiments of the Muslims on the shameful acts.

The senators said that both the countries have hurt the religious sentiments of 1.5 billion Muslims around the globe.

The Senate termed this disgraceful incident of Islamophobia as hateful and contrary to the principles of international law laid down in several instruments, including United Nations General Assembly resolution No. 36/35 of 25th November 1981 which proclaims the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance.
