LAUNCHING of the physical work on the long-awaited Sukkur-Hyderabad Section of M6 Motorway project is like a breeze of fresh air in the otherwise gloomy economic environment.

To be completed in thirty months, M-6 is the last part of the Peshawar-Karachi route after which all major cities will be connected by the motorway, giving opportunity to thousands of people daily to access modern and decent travel facilities.

Propaganda by political opponents notwithstanding, one must give credit to PML(N) for introducing the concept of motorways and metro bus projects that have led to modernization of the country’s communication sector, which is so vital for socio-economic progress and prosperity.

High quality road and transport infrastructure as well as railway system have become pre-requisites for investment and economic/employment opportunities in different regions of the country.

It is because of this that the previous government of PML(N) gave priority to improvement and expansion of the road network under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) but the initiative received serious setbacks due to lack of commitment by the previous Government.

Unfortunately, the last Government of PPP shelved the visionary initiative of Prof Dr Attaur Rehman for establishment of world class universities in different parts of Pakistan and down-graded motorway projects and the PTI Government scaled back work on CPEC, inflicting heavy losses on the country.

As pointed out by Federal Minister for Water Resources Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah, Sindh has three ports and a network of motorways is needed for their optimum usage.

He has also presented a legitimate proposal for building a motorway to connect Balochistan with Punjab and hopefully the National Highway Authority (NHA) would conceive and evolve a feasible project at the earliest for consideration by the Government.
