Islamabad: Sunday’s by-elections proved to be another morale booster for the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as the party crushed the PDM on 6 NA seats and 2 Punjab Assembly seats out of 11 up for grab.
Polling began at 8 am on Sunday and went uninterrupted. However, sporadic clashes were reported in some constituencies.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the polling process remained peaceful, and the commission’s central control room received 15 complaints of code violations.
Results
According to official results, the PTI bagged 6 out of 8 NA seats. It emerged victorious in 2 out of 3 seats of the Punjab assembly.
PTI’s victories
- NA-22 Mardan-III
Imran Khan defeated PDM-backed JUI-F’s Maulana Muhammad Qasim with a margin of 8,500 votes. Khan bagged 76,681 votes.
- NA-24 Charsadda-II
Imran Khan defeated ANP’s Aimal Wali Khan here by 10,233 votes.
- NA-31 Peshawar-V
The PTI Chairman emerged victorious against ANP’s Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. Khan bagged 57,824 votes, while Bilour could only get 32,253 votes.
- NA-108 Faisalabad-VIII
PDM-backed PML-N’s Abid Sher Ali was crushed by the PTI Chairman who defeated the PML-N candidate with a margin of 24,471 votes.
- NA-118 Nankana Sahib –II
Imran Khan sails to victory after defeating PML-N’s Shezra Mansab Ali by a little over 12,000 votes.
- NA-239 Korangi, Karachi-I
Imran Khan won Karachi’s NA-239 by-elections with 50,014 votes by defeating MQM-P’s Nayyar Raza, who could only get 18,116 votes.
PDM’s NA victories
- NA 157 Multan-IV
PDM-backed PPP candidate, Ali Musa Gillani, defeated Meher Bano Qureshi of the PTI by 19,750 votes. Ali Musa Gillani bagged comfortable 1,70,327 votes, while Qureshi’s daughter could only get 82,114 votes.
- NA-237 Malir-II
Despite winning six, Imran Khan lost Malir’s seat to PPP’s Abdul Hakeem Baloch, who defeated the PTI chairman with a margin of 10,000 votes.
On the Punjab Assembly seats, PTI candidates Muhammad Faisal Khan Niazi and Malik Muhammad Muzaffar Khan emerged victorious from PP-209 Khanewal and PP-241 Bahawalnagar, respectively, while PML-N’s Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed Bhangoo bagged the PP-139 Sheikhupura seat.
