The universities of the federal capital are actively participating in providing assistance to the flood-affected people by collecting hefty amounts and offering free education/scholarships to the students of such areas.
According to the sources, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the universities have committed to further mobilize their resources for immediate, mid-term and long-term relief of the flood-affected areas of the country.
HEC’s IT division has created a web portal for mutual sharing of information among universities so that all activities of the higher education sector for flood-affected areas are executed in a coordinated manne. Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has established relief camps in different parts of the country for flood affectees. It has also waived the fee for one semester (Autumn-2022 semester) for its students living in the areas affected by the recent catastrophic rains and floods.
According to the details, the ongoing students admitted in matriculation and intermediate programs in Sindh (except Karachi), Balochistan, DI Khan, and DG Khan region will have a full fee waiver in the ongoing admissions of the Autumn-2022 semester. The students of Associate Degree (Arts) programs in these areas will get a 50% fee waiver.
AIOU Academic Staff Association (ASA) unanimously decided to provide financial assistance, tents, and basic medical facilities to victims in flooded areas. The body has also collected more than 1.7 million rupees so far, from which 8 lac rupees are donated from the fund of the ASA and we are aiming to collect 2 million rupees at least.
However, Quaid-e-Azam Alumni Association (QAUAU) has decided that in close coordination with the QAU administration, a special scholarship programme will be launched for ensuring the continuation of studies of flood-affected students enrolled at the university.
The Chancellor of Riphah International University-RIU, Muhammad Hassan Khan has announced Rs. 10 million to the “Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Initiative (FRRI)” Program launched by the university to help flood affectees of Pakistan.
The main objective of the FRRI Program is to start rehabilitation of the designated areas aiming to start with relief and will focus on the rehabilitation in the coming days, the university official sources informed.
