Two people died of Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba, in two different private hospitals of the Karachi city. A 59- year old man, Hussain Afzal resident of Kiamari and 38-year old Ali Guhar belonged to Banaras died of brain-eating Naegleria fowleri in separate private hospitals of the Karachi.
They were brought to private hospitals few days ago where they died during treatment. A total four people died so far in the Karachi. However, Director Health Karachi Dr Hamid Jumani was not award about the deaths. Health experts said Naegleria fowleri is a brain-eating amoeba that enters through a person’s nose and starts consuming brain tissue.
The amoeba loves warm water and can survive in temperatures as high as 46 degrees. Fresh water bodies such as ponds, lakes, swimming pools, as well as underground and overhead tanks are the most common points.
