Best University teachers awards announced

The Higher Education Commission on Thursday announced the winners of the ‘Best University Teacher Awards.’ The awards were announced at a ceremony that was attended by senior academicians, teachers and officials of the HEC.
Federal Minister fot Education Rana Tanveer Hussain was the chief guest on the occasion. According to details, Dr Syed Asghar Nadeem, a faculty member of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Lahore won the award in the category of Life Sciences and Medicine. Farah Naz Beg, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi won the award in the category of Physical Sciences and Engineering.
Momin Ayyub, Associate Professor at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) won the award in the category of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Best University Teacher Award was established in 2003 with the aim to recognize outstanding teachers as well as incentivize them to further enhance their teaching skills.
The Best University Teacher Award of each category consists of a cash prize of Rs. 1 million as well as a certificate of recognition. Besides, the best teacher of each university gets a cash prize of Rs. 200,000 along with a certificate of recognition.
Speaking on the occasion Rana Tanveer Hussain Federal Minister for Education congratulated the recipients of the awards and said he always held teachers in highest esteem. Teachers he said played great role in character-building of humans. In Pakistan we need trained teachers but unfortunately, there are no such institutions which could train and equip teachers with necessary skills.
We are in the government for a very brief period but we shall do our best to upgrade teachers’ skills and professional competence, he said. He also referred to the fact that many PhDs were jobless and there was no support system in place for PhD scholars and researchers.
The minister emphasized skill-based teaching and learning and made it clear there was no room for traditional teaching/education.
He asked the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to keep in touch with primary and secondary education so that well-trained and professionally competent people could come forward.
