Rafael Nadal made light work of Casper Ruud to win a record-extending 14th French Open title.

His win also took his grand slam tally to 22, extending his own record that he set after winning the Australian Open to move clear of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Having already beaten Djokovic in getting to the final, many held trepidation that the summit clash would be a walk in the park for Nadal over the Norweigan making his maiden grand slam final.

The fears of many came true as the 36-year-old won the first 6-3 by stepping on the gas after both players had dropped their serve at the start of the match.

Nadal then traded breaks with the world number eight Ruud but the Spaniard powered through the next four games to bag the second set 6-3 on his fourth set point when his opponent double-faulted.

Firmly in the driver’s seat at this point, Nadal delivered a bagel in the final set to seal the match 6-3, 6-3,6-0, and win his 14th French Open title.

No man in the history of tennis has won a single grand slam more times than Nadal in the Parisian capital.

It is also the first time in his career that he has won the first two grand slams to start the year.
