Liverpool beat Southampton to take the English Premier League title race to the final day.

Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip secured a 2-1 win after Nathan Redmond had given the home side an early lead at St Mary’s stadium.

The win closed the gap to leader Manchester City to just a single point ahead of the final game day.

A heavily rotated side took the field for Liverpool who still has a Champions League final to contend.

Juergen Klopp changed nine of the team who beat Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Saturday with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah injured but several starters rested.

It was not the biggest of surprises when Southampton took a 13th-minute lead through a wonderful Nathan Redmond strike after the winger cut in from the left flank.

As the visitors sought a quick reply, Roberto Firmino, who led the line in the absence of Sadio Mane, had a header ruled out for offside.

Liverpool finally drew level in the 27th minute with Takumi Minamino firing a fierce shot in at the near post.

The Reds suffered more injury misery when defender Joe Gomez had to be substituted at the interval after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury just before the break.

Liverpool, famous for its resilience, secured the three points after Kostas Tsimikas’s corner was headed in by Matip in the 67th minute.

They had little trouble seeing out the rest of the game and setting up what promises to be a remarkable final day.

After Liverpool beat Southampton they now host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on the final day while City are at home to Aston Villa.

Villa are coached by Liverpool’s former captain Steven Gerrard who never managed to win a Premier League title with the Reds but can deliver them one by stopping City.

Guardiola’s City has 90 points with Liverpool sitting on 89.
