UEFA’s Women’s Champions League final will be contested between Barcelona Femeni and Lyon.
Barcelona Femeni qualified for the final despite their 45-match win streak coming to an end at the hands of Wolfsburg in the second leg of their contest in Germany.
The 2-0 loss was not enough for the Germans to overcome a 5-1 first-leg deficit.
The first half was a cagey affair as Barca protected their four-goal advantage and Wolfsburg were wary of leaving too much space at the break by attacking too soon.
Wolfsburg began the second half with much more intent. Tabea Wassmuth, via a deflection, hammered home the first goal of the game from just outside the box in the 47th minute.
Jill Roord then added the second on the hour mark finding the bottom corner from long range.
That fuelled belief of a comeback with the aggregate score reduced to 5-3, but the next goal never arrived.
Wolfsburg will seek consolation in the fact they are the first side to beat Barca since June.
They also remain on track to regain the league title they lost to Bayern Munich last season, and are in the DFB Pokal final against Potsdam.
Despite the loss, Barca are on to a third UWCL final in four years.
Jonatan Giraldez’s side has already won the league and the Spanish Supercopa this season and remains on track for a Quadruple, with a Copa de la Reina semifinal to come in addition to a second successive Champions League final.
Standing in their way in the Women’s Champions League final are Lyon.
Lyon, seeking an eighth UWCL trophy, won five titles in a row from 2016-20 before losing to PSG in the quarterfinals last year.
The French side reached the final after overcoming PSG 5-3 on aggregate.
Ada Hegerberg put the visitors in front on 14 minutes in the second leg heading home from Selma Bacha’s cross.
PSG struck back through Marie-Antoinette Katoto who scored just after the hour mark to cut the aggregate deficit to 4-3 after the first leg had finished 3-2 in Lyon.
France women’s international Wendie Renard put matters to rest in the 83rd minute, though, powering a header past substitute goalkeeper Charlotte Voll to seal the win.
