Mehmood nominated for Punjab governor’s post
Former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was elected Speaker National Assembly unopposed on Friday. His election came after National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser resigned from his position after joint opposition submitted a no-confidence motion against former prime minister Imran Khan.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf after approval from the party had submitted his nomination papers in the assembly secretariat. According to the National Assembly Secretariat, notification regarding the election of Raja Pervez Ashraf as Speaker will be issued in accordance with the rules.
PPP leaders Khursheed Shah and Naveed Qamar were the guarantors of the former prime minister.
Meanwhile, the PPP has nominated its leader Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood as Punjab governor, sources said Friday, as the coalition government’s cabinet in the Centre will reportedly be finalised this week. Sources further said that the PPP leadership has informed Mehmood of the decision.
Mehmood, who was earlier part of PML-F, decided to part ways with the party after then-president Asif Ali Zardari appointed him as Punjab governor in December 2012 and he served till June 2013.
