Pakistan Women’s Association Kuwait organizes thyroid awareness webinar for women on 13th January, 2022. Panel of speakers was consisting of Dr. Maham Adeel, Dr. Farah Zahid, Dr. Anum Irfan and Dr. Amal Abdul Latif discussed and delivered key note presentations and speeches on thyroid awareness. A large number of women has partici-pated in the webinar. Event started with the recita-tion of Holy Quran and Nasheed by Aysha Irfan and Robeela Ghazal respectively.

Dr. Maham Adeel, discussed the topic in details by slides and video presentations, well supported by her colleagues Dr. Farah Zahid, Dr. Anum Irfan and Dr. Amal Abdul Latif. She said that thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland located just above your collarbone and in front of the windpipe. The gland produces the hormones T3 and T4. These hormones help to regulate metabolism, manage body tempera-ture and control heart rate. If your thyroid is over-producing or under producing these hormones, it can cause significant health concerns. January is Thyroid Awareness Month, but how many of us know what the thyroid is? and what it does? Your thyroid is important for regulating your metabolism, body temperature and other core physical functions. The early indicators of thyroid are, Larger appetite than usual, Sudden weight loss, even though you’re eating the same amount of food or more, Fast or uneven heartbeat or sudden pounding of your heart (palpitations), Nervousness, anxiety, or irritability, Trembling in your hands and fingers (called trem-ors), Sweating, Changes in your period, Slowed heart rate, Increased heart rate, Sensitivity to heat, Sensitivity to cold.

Thyroid problems affect your life, thyroid dis-ease can affect your mood, primarily causing either anxiety or depression. Generally, the more severe the thyroid disease, the more severe the mood changes. If you have an overactive thyroid (hyper-thyroidism), you may experience, unusual nervous-ness. The most common thyroid disorder is hypo-thyroidism. Hypo- means deficient or under (ac-tive), so hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underperforming or producing too little thyroid hormone.

The best treatment for hypothyroidism is pure synthetic T4 (levothyroxine sodium). It works just like your thyroid hormone and has few, if any, no-ticeable side effects. Treatments for hypothyroidism are Levothroid, Levoxyl, Synthroid, Unithroid etc.

All thyroid diseases can be treated, resulting in normal thyroid function. However, this frequently requires being on medication to maintain the normal thyroid state.—PR
