IN order to add transparency and to get rid of the notion of ineffectiveness generally related to the system, it is heartening to see the Punjab government switching to the digital forums.
Going a step further, the provincial government has now introduced a biometric system for transfer of all kinds of vehicles and motorcycles.
The biometric system is affiliated with National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and it is now mandatory for the buyer or seller of a vehicle to complete the process of biometric transfer by reaching out to an excise or NADRA office.
The people and car dealers will also be able to avail the service of the excise department at their homes or workplaces. Indeed this system will go a long way in eliminating the malpractices used in the market.
It also makes the whole process more transparent both to the old and the new owner of the vehicle.
The government had been working on it for quite some time and finally it has now been implemented to eliminate the fraudulent activity related to the transfer of vehicles.
It has been observed that a lot of people drive their vehicles on Open Transfer Letter, which means that they do not transfer the vehicle to their name.
This is an unlawful practice which may put the previous owner in trouble if the car gets caught in any criminal activity.
Then there have been several cases reported in recent years where the vehicles were sold without any prior consent of the owner of the vehicle due to the absence of any foolproof system.
Therefore, this latest system will help eliminate the corrupt practices prevalent in the sale and purchase of vehicles.
This shall also help the government keep the record of the cars bought and sold in the province, and will allow the authorities to conveniently trace any suspicious activity.
On the other hand, it is also the responsibility of the residents of Punjab not to hassle while buying or selling the car to avoid facing law or any inconvenience in the future.
