Director General Social Welfare Punjab Mudasser Riaz Malik has said that the provincial government has decided to set up a separate community welfare centre for transgender where they will have accommodation, food and various skill learning facilities.
Speaking as chief guest at a consultative meeting on transgender organized by ‘Khawaja Sara Society’ and ‘Saathi Foundation’ here on Friday, he said vowed to resolve the issues faced by the transgender and said that the biggest problem is to know the exact number of transgender as it is generally hidden in society.
Mudasser Riaz said that there was need to introduce effective legislation and implementation of law in this regard and the idea of treating transgender as mere means of entertainment has to be changed.
‘Education, health, equal employment opportunities are the right of transgender’, he said adding that on the direction of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, steps are being taken to make eunuchs useful members of the society.
‘In this regard, the DG Social Welfare told, transgender should also come forward in a determined manner’. Welcoming the holding of the consultative meeting, he said civil society is also taking forward awareness campaigns on protecting transgender rights in a positive manner.
