Articles and letters may be edited for the purposes of clarity and space. They are published in good faith with a view to enlightening all the stakeholders. However, the contents of these writings may not necessarily match the views of the newspaper.

Recycling of confidential papers

Instead of burning secret papers and throwing them into the garbage and contributing to CO2 emissions, we also employ a recycling technique to use a paper five times as reuse. As usual, we use the burning technique which is quite easy and cheap but not environment-friendly and also a big budget is given to them by the government. So, a critical and analytical approach is necessary to accommodate them.

We use some recycling techniques such as pulping the sensitive documents by placing them in a large trashcan and treating them with bleach. As a chemical engineer from the Punjab University, I know the action of bleach is to decolour the paper as well as to break the paper.

On a large scale, we built a locked warehouse where these shredded papers are placed and then next to the mixed paper recycling bin. In the end, transport these confidential papers to recycling industries. At present, in Pakistan, there are about 100 units in the organized and unorganized sectors where we supply paper for reuse.

Economic crisis

Currently, Pakistan is facing a high economic crisis. The core factor is its foreign debts that are increasing each day. According to the “debt Bulletin by the finance ministry’s debt policy coordination office” its gross public debt reached Rs 40 trillion as of June 2021. This amount owes from different countries and organizations such as the United State, IMF, Paris Club, multilaterals donors and from international bonds. On the other side, its currency is devaluating against the US dollar and others.

The current rate of dollar in open market reached nearly 180. Due to high burden of loans, the inflation too is rising in every financial year. According to a survey, it is 8.9%. The GDP is the same way decreasing. Because the GDP growth rate is projected to slope around 1.50% in 2021 and 4 percent is expected in 2022, according to “Pakistan econometric model”. The current situation of the economy is in great recession.

Likewise, all economic factors are suppering. By analyzing these all facts and figures the ministry of finance needs to take suggestions from different economists in Pakistan or outside Pakistan for the purpose of coming out from this overall economic crisis. Further, it needs to increase the direct taxes, exports by creating more and more investment. Then the economy gets stable to maintain the export and import deficit. And can decrease the foreign debt by earning dollar on exports.

Where’s the subsidy?

Is the LPG cylinder now costing Rs 900 (plus tips of Rs 30 on every cylinder to the delivery man) cheaper? People have not received any subsidy on LPG cylinders during last twenty-two months.

Like onions, cooking gas is a basic need of the people too, without which we cannot survive. The government needs to be aware of the LPG subsidy which has disappeared from our bank accounts since April 2020. Till today, the government has not given any clarification to the people as to why the LPG subsidy has been removed?

Faisalabad incident and media

It refers to the editorial “Violence against Women” in which the Faisalabad incident is presented as a glaring example of violence against women. Unfortunately, right after the terrible Sialkot incident, Faisalabad incident garnered much attention and criticism. Before the CCTV footage appeared, the whole story had been disseminated. In order to get more and more coverage, media aired story without some research on issue. CCTV footage shows that women undressed themselves to threaten the shopkeeper. Footage showed that they stole some things and tried to run away.

The shopkeeper tried to lock the door from outside to bar them from running but he could not resist. However, he captured one of them and pushed her towards the shop. Other women undressed themselves to get sympathy in favour of the captured woman. The women seemed professional as they resorted to such an embarrassing act. Presenting one side of the coin is not a positive omen. Had the media done little research, the unnecessary criticism to our country could have been averted. So, it is media’s responsibility to spread clarity instead of misinformation. This is what Yuval Noah Harari writes “In a world deluged with misinformation, clarity is power”.
